Sad Sack Humor

I must differ with Cathy Curtis’ assessment that the “heart” of the Sad Sack comic strip is feelings of worthlessness and degradation (“Images of Behavior,” Aug. 16).

As in all historical analysis, we must look at the Zeitgeist of the time. There was no Jungian Angst in the minds of the World War II GIs when they laughed at this comic. Nor was their “inner child” trying to relate to the degradation of KP.

They actually found humor in the plight of the “Sad Sack.” There was a sense that nonconformity was caused by laziness rather than some pre-memory repression. I suggest we look for some other “meaning” in Mike Kelly’s “garbage.”
