GTE California to Cut 350 Hourly Jobs: The Thousand Oaks-based firm also said it will reduce the number of contract positions. The cuts will be made through attrition, buyouts and, if necessary, layoffs, GTE said. It said the move reflects the use of new, less labor-intensive systems and processes expected to improve customer service, reduce costs and streamline operations. The company is facing increased competition as it prepares for Jan. 1, when it will start competing with long-distance companies to handle its customers’ regional toll calls. The company will offer two buyout programs as part of the negotiated labor agreement between GTE and various bargaining units that represent its hourly employees throughout the country.
