LOOKING AHEAD
Reuben Droughns, Anaheim running back, gets his toughest test of the season next Friday. The Colonists play host to Irvine, three-time Southern Section champions, at Glover Stadium.
Droughns gained 2,000 yards last season. But the Vaqueros have shut down more than one standout running back during the past three seasons.
Edison and San Clemente, two teams that could be playoff contenders in their respective leagues, play at San Clemente Friday night.
VICTORY TRIBUTE
Fullerton’s 14-13 victory over Whittier California Friday was dedicated to Jamie Schatz, younger sister of Indian tight end Ryan Schatz, who died just before the season began. Jamie Schatz played soccer and volleyball and was the sophomore class president. Team members will wear her initials on their helmets during the season.
OILER JEWELRY
It’s not uncommon to see football boosters sell any number of things to raise money for their programs, but personalized jewelry?
One of the items offered by the Huntington Beach boosters is an orange and white wooden necklace made up of of beads, stars and a hand-painted Oiler football medallion. Jed Donahue, manning the merchandise table Thursday night, offered a personal touch by carefully adding the name and number of a favorite player with his paint brush.
Also for sale: wooden Oiler helmet earrings.
“You’ll notice they match,” Donahue said.
FINDING PAYDIRT
After being held scoreless for just the third time in 13 years last week, Valencia wasted little time finding the end zone Friday night. The Tigers moved 62 yards in three plays in 1 minute 24 seconds, and scored on a three-yard run by Damian Askins on their way to a 27-13 victory over Servite.
A LONG 10 YARDS
Brea-Olinda’s Matt Kalcevich booted perhaps the most impressive 10-yard punt in school history in the Wildcats’ 28-7 loss to Villa Park Friday.
With 20 seconds left in the first half, Kalcevich lined up for a punt at the Villa Park 44, but the ball rolled through his legs, all the way to the Brea 30. Kalcevich scooped up the ball, got chased toward the sidelines by two defenders, then, just before he went out of bounds, got off a punt that traveled 36 yards in the air, but only counted for 10 on the stat sheet.
WHAT A PUNT
Capistrano Valley’s Chris Culbertson had an 81-yard punt against Edison Friday, the fourth longest punt in Orange County history. Culbertson’s kick rolled into and out of the end zone for a touchback.
Culbertson is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker.
UNPLUGGED
When technical difficulties prevented the national anthem from being sung on time at the La Quinta-Estancia game Thursday night at Newport Harbor High, the Aztec players took it upon themselves to break into song.
The players started softly but were booming out the final words much to the delight of the small crowd and the Estancia cheerleaders, who offered encouragement throughout.
ON THE RECORD
“Thank God for Dwayne.”
--Scott Orloff, Santa Ana Valley coach, after Dwayne Cherrington rushed for 279 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored on a 92-yard kick-off return in the Falcons’ 34-23 victory over Bellflower Friday at Santa Ana Stadium.
“Just the coaches. We have a lot of hurt feelings after last week.”
--Ed Riley, Tustin assistant coach when asked before the game if there were any key injuries. The Tillers lost to cross-town rival Foothill last Friday, 40-6.
“I tried not to think about it, but it really hurts,”
--Rik Glover, a Santa Margarita defensive end who played Friday after nearly slicing off two fingers during sculpture class the day before. The 6-0, 190-pound senior needed six stitches to close the wound that severed the tendons and nerves.
