Orange County High School Football PREP EXTRA : Serrano Beats Brethren Christian With Big Quarter
ARTESIA — Michael Carmona scored three second-quarter touchdowns to help Phelan Serrano score 36 points in the second quarter on the way to a 55-16 nonleague rout of Brethren Christian Friday at Artesia High.
Quarterback Russell Anderson threw scoring passes of eight and five yards in the big firsthalf.
Serrano did much of the damage on the ground, thanks to the duo of Carmona and Raul Espitia. Carmona dominated the first half, scoring on runs of 20, one and 49 yards, to finish with 138 yards in 13 carries.
“It’s nice to have two kids like that in the backfield,” Serrano Coach Ray Maholchic said.
Espitia picked it up in the second half. He had nine carries for 133 yards, including a 49-yard run up the middle to put Serrano ahead, 54-8.
The Warriors struggled against a stifling rush that held quarterback Ryan Babcock to three first-half yards and an interception on nine passes.
Babcock threw a 85-yard touchdown pass to John Dingman and scored on a one-yard sneak in the second half.
