GARDEN GROVE : Gang Unit Arrests 220 Over Five-Week Span
A special five-week gang detail netted more than 220 gang-related arrests during August and September, police said last week.
The 15-officer unit logged arrests including one for homicide, four for robbery, seven for auto theft, 12 for felonious assault and 20 for firearms violations, Garden Grove Police Lt. Kevin Raney said. The detail also seized 20 guns and recovered seven stolen vehicles, Raney said.
Seven additional police officers were transferred to the department’s gang suppression unit Aug. 5 to curb growing gang activity in the city, Raney said. The department disbanded the special detail Sept. 9, Raney said.
“We wanted to make sure we had a safe, quiet start to school,” he said.
Typically, gang activity increases during the summer and falls off when school begins, Raney said.
