The City Council tonight will consider support of the statewide initiative seeking to bar illegal immigrants from receiving public education, non-emergency health care and social services.

Councilman Mark Leyes, who is seeking reelection, has asked the council to discuss Proposition 187, which will go before voters in November.

Councilman Bruce A. Broadwater, who is running for mayor, also wants the council to consider resolutions asking the federal government to share the cost to resettle immigrants, curb illegal immigration and adopt new policies to assist cities affected by illegal immigration.

Several Orange County cities, including Westminster and Huntington Beach, have passed similar resolutions in the past.
