Celebrity Donations Aid Homeless Benefit

Shannen Doherty parted with her jeans to raise money for the homeless of the San Fernando Valley.

Jessica Lange handed over her jewelry. And Chevy Chase, his golf hat.

In a fund-raiser for the Valley Mayors’ Fund for the Homeless on Sunday at the Sherman Oaks home of the agency’s president, Patricia Winters, celebrity doodads and pieces of clothing were put up for silent auction. The amount raised is still being tabulated, but Winters said the event drew $5,000 in ticket sales alone.

The Mayors’ Fund raises money for organizations in the Valley that help homeless people and battered women, such as the Valley Shelter and the Women’s Care Cottage.

Pulled from the original lineup of goods to be auctioned was O. J. Simpson’s wardrobe from “Frogman,” the pilot for a television series that Simpson had been shooting before he was arrested in connection with the slaying of his ex-wife and one of her friends.

While none of the “Frogman” clothing was auctioned at the event, Winters said she still intends to sell it. “If we can make money for our cause, we should do it.”

Winters also held off on selling Mickey Rooney’s Army discharge papers and opted to return them to him. Rooney exchanged the document for T-shirts and signed photographs, Winters said.
