Popular Explorers: Mazda is negotiating with Ford Motor Co. for an allotment of four-door Explorers in the 1995 model year. Since 1990, Mazda has marketed a two-door Explorer as the Mazda Navajo, but Ford has steadfastly refused to ship it any of the more popular four-door models.
A spokesman for Mazda Motor of America said the Irvine-based import and distribution company hasn’t decided whether it will continue selling only the two-door version if Ford turns down its request for the bigger model.
While the two-door Navajo and its Ford counterpart, the Explorer Sport, sell well in Southern California and a few other sunny climes, they aren’t big movers for dealers in the East and the vast midsection of the country.
