SAN CLEMENTE : Sobriety Checkpoint Will Be Conducted
The Sheriff’s Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday night and early Saturday morning.
The checkpoint is one in a series planned in seven South County cities, which are sharing a $377,620 grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety.
Under the grant, sobriety checkpoints will be held through Dec. 31, 1995, in Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and San Clemente.
Each of the seven cities will contribute $18,000 toward the program, which includes roving patrols by specially assigned deputies whose only task is to arrest drunk drivers.
Since those patrols began Jan. 1, the number of drunk driving arrests has risen in the seven cities, officials said.
Friday night’s sobriety checkpoint in San Clemente--the first under the program--will be from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
