Angels Fire Coaches Macha and Oliveras
The Angels fired third base coach Ken Macha and first base coach Max Oliveras Wednesday and will replace them from within the organization.
Macha, who still will manage the Angels’ entry in the Arizona Fall League, and Oliveras each will be given an opportunity to stay as a minor league coach. Macha is expected to reject the offer; Oliveras still is considering it.
Angel Manager Marcel Lachemann has decided to retain Bobby Knoop as his bench coach, batting coach Rod Carew, pitching coach Chuck Hernandez and bullpen coach Joe Maddon.
“I’ve been through this before, and I’ll get through it,” Macha said. “Hopefully, the Arizona Fall League will provide me some opportunities.”
Macha, 43, hand-picked by former manager Buck Rodgers, has been a major league coach the last seven seasons, the last two with the Angels. Oliveras, 48, who spent nine years in the Angel organization, was coaching in the majors for the first time this season.
