PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Owens’ Runs Run Troy Ragged as Brea Rolls to 28-7 Victory
BREA — Jerome Owens ran for 183 yards and scored three touchdowns Friday night to lead Brea-Olinda past Troy, 28-7, in a nonleague game at Brea-Olinda High School.
The Wildcats (2-1) scored 28 points after falling behind, 7-0, after Troy scored on its first possession. But the Warriors (2-1) were unable to stop Owens all night and the junior running back scored Brea’s final three touchdowns to blow the game open, scoring on two three-yard runs and a one-yard plunge.
Owens’ longest run from scrimmage was 27 yards. He also completed a 31-yard pass to Andy Wirz during the Wildcats’ final scoring drive. During the 10 play, 88-yard drive, Owens was responsible for 72 of those yards.
In a battle of running backs, Troy’s Larry Montgomery ran for 93 yards in 22 carries. The teams combined to pass for only 125 yards in 20 attempts.
Troy’s touchdown came on a two-yard run by Ryl Relatores. Brea answered with a 38-yard run by quarterback Matt Kalcevich, who rushed for 84 yards in nine carries.
Troy’s last threat was stopped by an interception at the goal line by Mike Beamer with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Kalcevich, who threw for only 54 yards on seven attempts, had runs of 38 and 32 yards and finished with 84 yards.
The Wildcats shut down Troy’s passing game, limiting the Warriors to 40 yards in 11 attempts.
