PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Rebels Take Route 66 Past Cypress
ANAHEIM — Savanna scored 33 points in the third quarter alone Friday night. By the end of the third quarter, Savanna had scored 60 points.
When it was finally over, Savanna had beaten Cypress, 66-14, at Western High School. It marked the second consecutive romp for the Rebels, who beat Katella, 42-6, last week.
It didn’t take long for the scoring frenzy to start Friday. Mike Flores scored on Savanna’s opening drive, a seven-yard run. Flores scored three times, kicked four PATs and had a two-point conversion run.
After an Alex Carbajal fumble recovery, Flores scored on a four-yard run.
Edrick Ennis intercepted a Cypress pass, and on the next play, caught a 21-yard scoring pass from Jeremy Klemp.
Two plays later, Dustin Dahl intercepted a David Wheeler pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown to give Savanna a 27-0 lead.
Cypress (1-2) scored just before halftime when Wheeler hit Bryan Huskey with a 64-yard touchdown pass.
The Rebels (3-0) blew it open in the third quarter. Daven King started the rally with a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown. Flores scored on a five-yard run. Eric Shine ran 60 yards for a touchdown. King added a 36-yard scoring run, and Brandon Bird scored from four yards out.
Said Cypress Coach John Selbe: “He (Fred Di Palma, Savanna’s coach) was nice. He wasn’t running up the score. He’s a heck of a guy.”
