Rio Mesa 36, Santa Clara 6--Rashod Rose rushed 18 times for 170 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown in the third quarter, to lead Rio Mesa (1-2).

Rio Mesa scored on its first drive after Fahad Azimi fumbled on the goal line and teammate Erick Olsen recovered for the score.

In the second quarter, Azimi threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Randy Hurt on a fourth-and-five play to give the Spartans a 14-0 lead at the half.

Steve Arneson started the second half by returning an interception 17 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

Santa Clara drove 65 yards in the fourth quarter to score on an eight-yard pass from Andy Super to Matt Neuman. Rio Mesa retaliated three plays later on a 51-yard run by Ed Ransom.
