The plan was to rest Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier, and since the Cornhuskers’ opponent Saturday was Pacific, it didn’t make any difference.

“Coach (Tom) Osborne told me they didn’t want to play me very much,” Frazier said after No. 2 Nebraska romped to a 70-21 victory. “I guess 14 points was enough. That’s fine with me.”

Frazier suffered a leg bruise in last week’s 49-21 victory over UCLA and sat out a day of practice early in the week.

Frazier didn’t complain about not playing. “It might hurt my stats but we’ve got enough tough games on the schedule I can prove myself,” he said. “I’m not worried about that. There’s a long time to go.”

Osborne pulled many of his front-line players after the Huskers (4-0) scored quickly in their first two possessions against the outmanned Tigers (2-2). Frazier’s backup, junior Brook Berringer, handled things after that, and Nebraska scored on its next five possessions.

Berringer passed for three touchdowns and ran for another.

“I am very confident,” Berringer said after completing eight of 15 passes for 120 yards and rushing six times for 32 yards. “I wanted to go out and show the coaches good poise. I think they do know I have that. And they trust me to go out and play with confidence.”

Berringer’s 120 yards passing was the best throwing effort by a Nebraska quarterback this season.

“Throwing the ball is probably his best suit,” Nebraska quarterback coach Turner Gill said. “But he runs the option well too.”

Said Berringer: “I felt pretty good and feel I played well. I had a couple of throws that I wish I had back but overall I felt good. The big key is no turnovers. I was conscious of that and I managed to take care of the ball.”
