REGIONAL ROUNDUP : BYU’s Edwards Gets 200th Victory, 49-47

Jamal Willis ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns as Brigham Young’s passing attack took a rare back seat to give Coach LaVell Edwards his 200th victory, a 49-47 triumph over New Mexico in a Western Athletic Assn. game Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Edwards improved to 200-74-3 in his 23rd season with BYU. He is the 13th Division I-A coach to win 200 games.

The loss to BYU (3-1, 3-1) ruined a school record-setting passing effort by New Mexico’s Stoney Case, who threw for six touchdowns and completed 25 of 43 passes for 375 yards for the Lobos (0-4, 0-1).

Air Force 47, Texas El Paso 7--Jake Campbell rushed for 109 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Falcons (1-3, 1-0) racked up a school-record 700 yards in a WAC victory over the Miners (1-3, 0-1) at San Antonio.

Marcellus Chrishon ran for 185 yards and Mike Maxwell threw for two touchdowns to lead Nevada (3-1) to a 34-22 victory over Northeast Louisiana (0-4) in a nonconference game at Reno. Maxwell completed 18 of 32 passes for 228 yards. Alex Van Dyke caught eight passes for 108 yards. . . . Cody Ledbetter threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Lucious Davis with 1:40 left to give New Mexico State (2-2, 1-0) a 24-17 Big West Conference victory over Arkansas State (1-3, 1-0). . . . Joe Nedney kicked three field goals, the last a 21-yarder with 2:26 to play, as San Jose State (1-3, 1-0) won, 31-28, over Southwestern Louisiana (1-3, 1-1) in a Big West game at San Jose. Tim Holliday rushed for 123 yards as San Jose came back from a 21-0 second-quarter deficit. . . . Nevada Las Vegas (2-2, 1-0) recorded a 23-21 Big West victory over Utah State (1-3, 0-1) at Logan, Utah, when the Aggies’ Micah Knorr missed a 25-yard field goal wide right with 1:25 remaining. UNLV led, 23-7, going into the fourth quarter.

J.J. O’Laughlin completed 25 of 46 passes for 358 yards and two touchdowns but Cal State Northridge (1-2) had minus-31 yards rushing and lost to Southwest Texas State, 28-23, at San Marcos, Tex. . . . Matt Young kicked a 27-yard field goal with 3:09 left, lifting the University of San Diego (2-2) to a 29-24 victory over visiting Cal Lutheran (1-1). . . . Darnell Morgan rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns in 31 carries, helping Chapman to a 34-14 victory over Claremont-Mudd at Orange in its first home game in 62 years. . . . The Gateway Conference is now playing overtime games, and it took two overtimes for Western Illinois (2-2, 1-1) to beat Southwest Missouri State, 31-24, at Springfield, Mo.

Kevin Mason scored twice in directing Syracuse’s option to three long-distance scoring drives, but the Orangemen (3-1) still needed clutch defense in the closing minutes to beat East Carolina, 21-18, at Greenville, N.C. East Carolina (1-2) got within 21-18 after Marcus Crandell connected with tight end Scott Richards on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 5:25 left and Junior Smith ran for the two-point conversion. . . . Scott Mutryn passed for a touchdown and set up another in about two minutes in the first half and the Boston College defense did the rest in a 21-9 Big East victory at Pittsburgh. David Green gained 186 yards in 30 carries for Eagles (1-3, 0-1) in their first victory under Coach Dan Henning. Pitt, losing for the 11th time in 12 home games, fell to 1-3, 0-1. . . . Henry Burris completed a five-yard touchdown pass to fullback Sidney Morse with 1:14 remaining to give Temple (2-1) a 23-20 victory over Army (1-2) at West Point.

Defending Ivy League champion Pennsylvania (2-0, 1-0) almost lost for the first time in 14 games but stopped Dartmouth (0-2, 1-0) twice in the final minute to pull out a 13-11 victory at Hanover, N.H. . . . Darron Webb scored on two short runs and Brock Harvey hit Marc Ross on a 27-yard touchdown pass play as Princeton (1-1) scored on four of its first five second-half possessions to record a 29-3 victory over Colgate (1-2) at Princeton, N.J. . . . Rich Owens blocked the potential game-winning extra point with 12 seconds remaining, spoiling a dramatic bid for victory by Columbia and preserving a 28-28 tie for Lehigh (2-0-1) at Bethlehem, Pa. . . . Rob Glus passed for five touchdowns and Rich Lemon had his seventh consecutive 100-yard game, both school records, as Bucknell (2-1) recorded a 42-23 victory over Harvard (1-1) at Boston. . . . Bob Nelson ran for 117 yards, with 64 coming on a touchdown run, and Yale (2-0) scored its most points in 71 games in beating Holy Cross, 47-22, at New Haven, Conn. . . . John Wagner of Cornell (2-0) recovered a fumble by Fordham quarterback John Pohlman at the one-yard line with 58 seconds left, allowing the Big Red to win, 13-6, at New York. Fordham is 0-4.
