East Carolina (1-2) got within 21-18 after Marcus Crandell connected with tight end Scott Richards on a fourth-and-10, 20-yard touchdown pass with 5:25 left and Junior Smith ran for the two-point conversion.

The Pirates got the ball back at their 30 with two minutes left, but at midfield Crandell was sacked for a 10-yard loss and a fourth-and-11 pass gained only nine yards.
