COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Holland, Foster Lead O.C. Runners at Invitational

In the Golden West Invitational, Irvine Valley’s Larry Holland finished 12th (20:56) and Fullerton’s Rafaele Spennato finished 21st (21:32) in the four-mile men’s race at Huntington Beach’s Central Park. El Camino’s Humberto Sanchez broke the course record by 16 seconds in 20:19.

Fullerton was fourth and Irvine Valley finished fifth in the team competition. The men’s competition was won by Mt. San Antonio. Golden West finished eighth and Saddleback finished 10th.

In the women’s race, Golden West’s Kim Foster finished third (19:19) and Fullerton’s Teresa Vargas finished fourth (19:33) behind El Camino’s Sawako Nakamura, who broke the 5K course record by 26 seconds in 18:38. Irvine Valley’s Mayra Medina (19:36) and Darlene Pruitt (19:36) finished sixth and seventh.

Irvine Valley finished second behind El Camino. Golden West, Saddleback and Fullerton finished seventh through ninth.

In the Cuyamaca Invitational:

Orange Coast College ran to improve today while running against top-quality athletes on the men’s side. Coast’s men placed second (45) in the invitational behind Cuyamaca (39), last year’s State champion.

The Pirates were led on the men’s side by David Bolton (22:58) who finished sixth overall, behind Cuyamaca’s first-place finisher, Alisro Heredia (21:57), on the four-mile course.

In the Cypress water polo tournament:

Cypress 13, Mt. San Antonio 4--Dave Johnson scored four goals, Mustafa Hassan added two and Robbie Walsh recorded 12 saves to lead Cypress (4-1).

In the San Diego Mesa water polo tournament:

Saddleback 8, El Camino 7--Brian Pearce and K.C. Nance each scored four goals and Craig Gabert recorded seven saves to lead Saddleback (3-7) in the consolation round.
