Gandhi’s Birthday: On Sunday, Oct. 2, Indians observe Gandhi Jayanti, the 125th anniversary of Mohandas K. Gandhi’s birth. His doctrine of nonviolent resistance helped win Indian independence from the British Empire shortly after World War II. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, India, Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi Jan. 30, 1948.
To commemorate his birth, readings from the world’s major religious texts, including the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita and the Koran, are held at the Jumna River, where his body was cremated.
