SAN MIGUEL ISLAND : Man, 47, Dies After Diving Accident
A 47-year-old Glendale man died Sunday morning following a scuba diving accident off San Miguel Island, authorities said.
Kim Young was declared dead about 10 a.m. at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks two hours after the accident, county Deputy Coroner Mitch Breese said.
Young died of internal injuries caused by surfacing too quickly from 70 to 80 feet, Breese said.
Young was taken by helicopter from the Ventura Harbor-based boat Spectre about 9 a.m. to the hospital’s emergency room, according to U. S. Coast Guard Petty Officer James Bride.
“When we arrived, people on the vessel were performing CPR on him,” Bride said. “He was showing no vital (signs).”
Authorities said Young was diving off the northern tip of the island and had plenty of air left in his tanks when he surfaced.
According to Ted Cumming, captain of the Spectre, Young surfaced about 20 minutes into the day’s first dive and was swimming toward the dive boat when he began to complain about shortness of breath. He collapsed shortly thereafter.
