2 From O.C. Hurt in Emergency Plane Landing
SAN MATEO — A light plane made an emergency landing on a residential street, clipping utility wires and a few tall trees before it came to a halt with two injured Orange residents inside.
Rick Reed, a spokesman for the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services, told KCBS radio that it was “a miracle” no one on the ground was injured in Sunday’s incident in which the plane’s windshield and nose were damaged.
Pilot Mike Regli, 35, and passengers Katherine Cornellier, 30, both of Orange, were in stable condition.
Cornellier, who suffered a fractured back, was in Mills Memorial Hospital. Regli, who also injured his back, was in San Mateo County General hospital.
Harry Burton told the radio station he saw the plane heading south and it was about 400 feet in the air. He notice that the engines were off when it passed his home about 1:45 p.m.
Burton said he saw a small fire, but that the fire dissipated quickly.
The plane had departed from the San Carlos airport, but its destination was unclear, said Tom Aina, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Fire department crews were trying to stop the fuel leaking from the plane from going into the storm drains.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.
