COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Stuns UCLA in Soccer
UC Irvine pulled off the biggest victory in the history of its men’s soccer program with a 4-3 upset of second-ranked UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Sunday at Irvine.
It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Anteaters (6-1), who are off to their best start. UCLA, the conference favorite, is 6-1.
UC Irvine took a 3-0 lead at the half before UCLA rallied with two goals early in the second half.
UC Irvine’s Pat Stark scored from seven yards with about nine minutes left to put the Anteaters ahead, 4-2. John Houston had the assist.
UCLA’s Justin Selander scored with about four minutes left for the Bruins, but UC Irvine hung on.
Mike Succi, Manny Hernandez and Rich Breza scored in the first half for UC Irvine. Chris Taylor had 10 saves for the Anteaters.
P.J. Polowski had two assists for UC Irvine and leads the team with 18 points.
In another Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game:
Fresno State 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Visiting Cal State Fullerton (5-2-1, 0-1) was called for three yellow cards in an intense game between two top-20 teams. The Titans, ranked 17th, were called for 23 fouls and Fresno was assessed for 24.
Fresno, ranked 10th, is 7-1, 1-0.
In nonconference water polo:
USC 9, UC Irvine 4--UC Irvine led, 2-0, but second-ranked USC scored eight consecutive goals at Heritage Park in Irvine. Omar Amr had two goals and Matt Maunz and Peter Muller scored the other goals for UC Irvine (2-5), which is ranked seventh in the nation.
