SIERRA MADRE : Council Drops Bid to Reduce Planning Panel

After intense pressure from opponents, the City Council has tentatively reversed its decision earlier this year to cut the city’s Planning Commission from seven members to five.

The council decided the commission should have seven members until an advisory measure on the 1996 municipal ballot resolves the issue.

Opponents of the reduction had vowed to appeal a judge’s decision that upheld the city clerk’s refusal to count signatures on a petition for an election to restore the panel to seven members. The opponents collected about 1,200 signatures and said they would do it again.
