PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Goeas, Phifer Practice Again

Starting guard Leo Goeas and starting linebacker Roman Phifer practiced for the first time all week Friday in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Coach Chuck Knox said he expects Goeas, who was on crutches after last week’s game because of an ankle injury, to play without problem. Phifer will wear a splint on his hyper-extended elbow, which Knox said will still allow for him to make tackles.

The team will decide today if Chris Miller or Tommy Maddox will back up starter Chris Chandler at quarterback. Knox said Miller still is bothered by a shoulder injury.

Defensive tackle Sean Gilbert sat out a second consecutive practice because of a bruised shoulder.

Wayne Gandy, the team’s No. 1 draft pick, continues to toil as backup to Clarence Jones and Jackie Slater.

Defensive end Brad Ottis, the team’s second-round pick, is healthy, but Knox designated him inactive for this week’s game, along with running back James Bostic, the team’s No. 3 draft pick.

None of the team’s 10 draft selections will start this week, although wide receivers Isaac Bruce and Chris Brantley and safeties Toby Wright and Keith Lyle are expected to play.

The Rams are expected to draw about 30,000 Sunday after a 16-0 victory over Kansas City. Knox was asked if he was surprised by the lack of fan interest.

“I have no comment on that,” Knox said.
