GOOD ADVICE
Kevin Feterik, Los Alamitos’ quarterback to start the season, returned to the Griffin lineup Thursday. Feterik, who suffered a broken left hand in the team’s opener, was the holder for the the last extra point in Los Alamitos’ 39-12 victory over Pasadena Muir.
“We scored and Kevin said, ‘Coach, I’ll hold for the point,’ ” Coach John Barnes said. “I said, ‘Sure.’ ”
But Barnes must have realized what was at stake. He chased Feterik out onto the field, shouting, “Hold it with your right hand! Hold it with your right hand!”
Feterik’s left hand, the injured one, is his throwing hand.
MICKEY MOUSE TIME
Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen will get to keep a set of Mickey Mouse ears for at least a year after the Raiders’ 14-3 victory over University on Friday.
The second-year Sonora coach said he and Trojan Coach Mark Cunningham agreed the winning coach could wear the mouse ears until they meet again next season. Takkinen donned the ears after each victory when he served as an assistant coach at University.
EARLY CELEBRATION
Century quarterback Stanley Villanueva plunged up the middle and into the end zone from the four-yard line, let out a whoop and leaped into the waiting arms of his lineman to celebrate an apparent touchdown Friday.
He received congratulations from the entire offense before realizing the officials marked the ball at the one. No problem. Villanueva ran up the middle again on the next play for a touchdown that counted. But Century lost the game, 24-10.
ON THE RECORD
“We may have lost three players, but they’re out a tuba guy.”
--Dave Demarest, La Quinta baseball coach, while watching the Aztecs get beat up by Los Amigos, 41-6, Friday saw a Lobo band member being worked on by trainers.
LOOKING AHEAD
Savanna and Newport Harbor put their undefeated records on the line Thursday night at Glover Stadium.
Bring along your calculators: the Rebels are averaging 45 points, the Sailors 26.
On Friday, Esperanza will get more than a mere tuneup for its Sunset League opener against Edison when the Aztecs travel to Long Beach Veterans Stadium to play Long Beach Poly. The Jackrabbits are ranked fourth in the most recent Southern Section Division I poll.
Another interesting nonleague matchup Friday is Anaheim against Orange at El Modena High.
The Colonists will be trying to keep their momentum going before starting a rugged Orange League campaign. The Panthers, who have already surpassed their victory total of last season, will be looking to provide Dick Hill with his 200th career victory as a coach in the county.

LET IT PLAY
With 16 minutes to go in the pregame warm-ups, the National Anthem began playing over the loudspeakers at Orange Coast College.
Both players and fans thought it was just a microphone check--then they weren’t sure what to do as the anthem continued. Both Corona del Mar and Saddleback players and the fans stopped, stood up and took off their helmets or hats.
After the music stopped, it started up again. Finally, the public address announcer said, “Sorry, guys.” The music didn’t start again until Michelle Dupree, a senior at Corona del Mar, began singing at the scheduled time.
SKATING AWAY
Although many fans attended the Servite-Fountain Valley football game at Huntington Beach High’s stadium Friday, there was a group of individuals at the site who could care less about football. Several youngsters took advantage of a small concrete skateboard facility, just outside of the refurbished home entrance to the stadium. Only in Surf City.
OFFICIAL ASSIST
El Dorado defensive back David Meyers got an assist from the referee when Fullerton quarterback Chad Lukkes’ pass bounced off the referee’s back as he attempted to duck out of the way. Instead of falling for an incomplete pass, the ball bounced into Meyers’ hands for an interception.
BELL WARNING
The Estancia-Costa Mesa rivalry got off to an early start Thursday at Newport Harbor High, where about 25 Costa Mesa players showed up and cheered wildly for Ocean View in the Seahawks’ nonleague game against Estancia. The players chanted and offered verbal encouragement, but Ocean View fell, 14-3.
Costa Mesa and Estancia meet in the “Battle of the Bell” at 7 p.m., Oct. 28, at Newport Harbor.
