Acosta Leads Walnut Past La Habra, 21-6
LA HABRA — Quarterback Paul Acosta led Walnut in passing and rushing Friday, accounting for two scores, as the Mustangs ran their record to 4-0 with a 21-6 victory over La Habra.
Acosta completed 10 of 24 passes for 92 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another 89 yards and a score late in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory despite throwing three interceptions.
La Habra (1-3) could only muster 150 yards against a Mustang defense that sacked quarterback Sonje Berg three times. Walnut’s Eddie Diaz had two second-half sacks.
Walnut scored on its opening drive, going 72 yards on 13 plays. Sergio Arellano, who rushed for 43 yards in 13 carries, scored from three yards to put the Mustangs ahead, 7-0.
In the second quarter, Acosta connected with Asanti Danzie in the end zone for an 11-yard score to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead at halftime.
La Habra’s Will McIntosh, who replaced a shaken-up Berg late in the third quarter, scored from five yards to pull the Highlanders to within 14-6.
