Honolulu Fined $1 Million for Dumping Sewage

WASHINGTON — The city and county of Honolulu will pay $1.2 million in fines for dumping millions of gallons of untreated sewage into Hawaii’s waters from 1987 to 1992, the U.S. Justice Department has announced. It said Monday that Honolulu officials also agreed to overhaul their leaking, 1,900-mile sewer system, which had at least 60 spills in the five-year period.
