SANTA ANA : Verdicts Sealed Until Tuesday in 2 Killings
Jurors deliberated less than five hours Friday before reaching verdicts against a former ranch hand who contended he had amnesia when he shot and killed his sister-in-law and another woman.
But Orange County Superior Court Judge David O. Carter ordered the verdicts sealed until Tuesday morning, when attorneys on the case will be available.
Douglas Frederick Stanley, 58, of Westminster fled to Colorado after the July 8, 1993, slayings of Joyce Stanley, 52, and Terry Vasquez, 41, at a Fountain Valley embroidery shop.
His flight launched a nationwide manhunt that led to his capture in a tiny town after he crashed his car and abandoned it by the side of the road.
The prosecution contends that Stanley blamed his sister-in-law for his estranged relationship with his daughter and also despised the fact that the women were his superiors at the embroidery shop, where he ran errands. The prosecutor says Stanley plotted the killings.
But the defense contends Stanley could not have premeditated the killings. His heart condition and other medical problems triggered a stroke before the shooting and subsequent amnesia, leaving him unaware of his actions when he opened fire on the women, his attorney asserts.
