SWAT Team Exhibition to Highlight Safety Day Events in Newport Beach

Most people never get any closer to a police Special Weapons and Tactics team than what they see on their television sets, but residents will have a chance to see the city’s SWAT team in action Sunday as part of a Safety Day demonstration.

The SWAT team exercise is one highlight of the event, which will also include displays of fire and rescue equipment and services, lifeguard and Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol operations, and building department safety tips.

With the Laguna Beach fire a recent memory, building department officials hope that homeowners will turn out for a roofing fair to learn about ways to protect their homes with fire-resistant roofs.

Representatives of roofing manufacturers and contractors will demonstrate roofing installations, while firefighters will supervise a demonstration of a roof fire and sprinkler system.

Building Department officials will provide information on earthquake-safe construction.

Displays throughout the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event will include the Newport Beach police helicopter, its K-9 team, fire and rescue equipment, and lifesaving techniques by the American Red Cross.

The SWAT demonstration and a firefighting demonstration will both take place at noon.

Parking for the event is free.
