PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Laguna Beach Rallies, Then Falls to Coronado
CORONADO — After blowing a 27-point lead, Coronado defeated Laguna Beach, 39-34, when Ledge Hakes scored with no time remaining Friday at Coronado High.
Laguna Beach (1-4) took a 34-33 lead when Liam McDonagh scored on a four-yard run with 1 minute 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Hakes’ touchdown followed a blocked 25-yard field-goal attempt by Coronado with 17 seconds left. Laguna Beach Coach Mike Roche argued that the field-goal attempt should have been Coronado’s last play.
“That clock should have been running,” he said. “I thought we’d won the game. But I’m not going to blame the officials. We came out flat and didn’t play for three quarters. I just didn’t have them ready.”
Laguna Beach was outclassed early. The Artists trailed 20 at the half and 27-0 midway through the the third quarter after Hakes blew up the right sideline for a 63-yard touchdown.
Laguna Beach quarterback Nate Pivaroff put the Artists on the board with 42-yard touchdown run. Sean Dixon answered on the Coronado’s first play from scrimmage following the kickoff with a 71-yard touchdown run. Dixon’s touchdown gave Coronado a 33-6 lead. From that point Laguna Beach scored four consecutive touchdowns.
