Man in Critical Condition After Setting Self Afire With Gasoline
WESTMINSTER — A Buena Park man was in critical condition Wednesday night after he doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire, police said.
The man, identified by police as Brian A. Nunn, 29, suffered third-degree burns over 95% of his body, said a spokeswoman at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
The incident occurred about 5 a.m. at a gas station at Beach Boulevard and Hazard Avenue, where Nunn purchased a can of gasoline, a lighter and a pack of cigarettes, station attendant Carlitos Balanlay said.
Nunn then knelt down to pray, stood up, doused himself with gas, then set himself on fire before Balanlay could stop him, the attendant said.
While Balanlay called 911, customers smothered the flames, Balanlay said.
Police said they don’t know why Nunn set himself on fire.
