Pick Systems Inc. said Thursday that it has signed an agreement to supply more than $2 million worth of its database and operating system software to Digital Sciences Inc. for use in a purchasing network and business management software system now under development.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Digital Science’s multimedia computer system will allow nursing homes, hospitals, doctors’ offices, hotels and restaurants to order products and supplies electronically from a catalogue on a CD-ROM.

The open database operating system and a related graphics program developed by Irvine-based Pick Systems will be the basis for the system, Pick officials said.

The 30-year-old Orange County company was founded by software pioneer Richard Pick. It is an open database operating system, which means it can be installed in a wide variety of computers--as opposed to closed systems like IBM’s OS2, which controls the operation of IBM machines. Pick operating software is widely used in business applications.
