A Stream of Noted Authors Penciled In for Local Visits : ‘Star Trek’ biographer Yvonne Fern, chosen by Gene Roddenberry to write the chronicle of his life, is on the guest list.

There are nearly a dozen literary events happening in Ventura in the next seven days. Famous authors are coming to town, a local author will conduct a seminar, and many bookstores will be jamming and jumping.

“Gene Roddenberry: The Last Conversation” has just been published by the University of California Press as part of its new series, “Portrait of American Genius.” During the last year of Roddenberry’s life, the “Star Trek” creator and his wife asked author Yvonne Fern to live in their home and become the official biographer of his vision and philosophy. Fern will be at the Ventura Bookstore, 522 E. Main St., at 7 tonight.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, the Ventura Bookstore will host Deborah Blum, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Monkey Wars.” The book depicts the bitter controversy between animal rights advocates and research scientists over the use of primates in medical research.

Ventura’s Barnes & Noble, 4360 E. Main St., has an eclectic events list: Jess Dines will sign “How to Choose the Right Mate, Lover or Friend Through Handwriting” at 7 tonight. The store will thank customers at festivities celebrating its first anniversary from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Rebecca Rothenberg will sign her mystery thriller “The Dandelion Murders” at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Monthly poetry night features Tim Pompey, author of “Meditations Late in the Millennium,” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Open mike will follow.

Camarillo resident Paul Bishop, an LAPD detective and author of “Citadel Run” and “Kill Me Again,” will conduct a seminar for writers on “Police Procedures and Investigative Techniques” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Learning Tree University’s Chatsworth campus. Melodie Johnson Howe will sign “Beauty Dies” at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mysteries to Die For, 2940 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks.

Generations of kids have loved “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” by Bill Martin Jr., who will make a rare appearance at 3 p.m. Saturday at Adventures for Kids, 3457 Telegraph Road, Ventura. Martin and prize-winning artist Vladimir Radunsky will read from and autograph their new picture book, “The Maestro Plays.”

Simi Valley author Margaret Brownley has chosen the Stagecoach Inn Museum in Newbury Park to celebrate publication of her latest western romance “Wind Song” at 2 p.m. Sunday. “Wind Song” door prizes will be given away and everyone may visit the exhibits at the museum complex, which is open from 1 to 4 p.m. at 51 S. Ventu Park Road.
