PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE : Laguna Hills Tops Estancia, Wins Fourth in a Row
Two teams heading in opposite directions stayed the course as Laguna Hills held off Estancia, 21-9, in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday at Newport Harbor High.
The Hawks (5-2, 2-0) won their fourth consecutive game while the Eagles lost their third in a row.
The Hawks were led by Brendan McGraw, who scored two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. McGraw, a senior, ran for 168 yards in 37 carries.
Laguna Hills opened the scoring with 1 minute 41 seconds left in the first quarter as McGraw found the end zone on a 28-yard pass from Cory Pardoe.
The Eagles (3-4, 0-2) got their best field position of the game when Karlo Amaya returned the second-half kickoff 51 yards to the Laguna Hills 46-yard line.
Ten plays and almost four minutes later, a 36-yard field goal by Ben Novak closed the gap to 7-3.
On the ensuing drive McGraw completed a 14-play, 70-yard drive with a two-yard run to put Laguna Hills ahead, 14-3.
The Hawks put the game out of reach with McGraw’s 24th touchdown of the season from nine yards in the final quarter.
The Eagles were led by Novak, who caught a game-high eight passes for 88 yards, including a late eight-yard touchdown pass from Frough Jahid.
