PREP ROUNDUP : Villa Park Clinches Century League Girls’ Tennis Title
Seventh-ranked Villa Park clinched its first Century League title since 1982, defeating ninth-ranked Canyon for the second time in a week. The Spartans, led by No. 1 singles player Faye DeVera’s three victories, defeated Canyon, 12-6, Thursday after a 10-8 victory a week ago.
“This was convincing,” Villa Park Coach Sue Gardiner said. “These kids have what it takes. They’re not letting down against anyone and they’re not letting anything slip away.”
Villa Park (12-1, 8-0 in league) leads Canyon (13-3, 5-3) by three games and second-place El Modena, which has been beaten twice by Villa Park, by two games with two matches left.
In addition to DeVera’s sweep, Villa Park got three victories from its No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams of Jill Riley and Shawn Lerer and Susan Shaw and Carrie Ota.
Canyon received two of its six points from No. 1 singles player Shannon Wilkins.
