Lewis, Antelope Valley Find Running Room, 48-3

LANCASTER —  Most of the season has been a struggle for Jermaine Lewis and the Antelope Valley High offense.

The standout tailback had an outstanding season as a sophomore last year, but so far this season, opposing defenses have slowed Lewis and the Antelopes.

But early in the third quarter in Friday night’s 48-3 Golden League victory over Littlerock at Antelope Valley, Lewis exploded for an 81-yard scoring run which ignited Antelope Valley.

Antelope Valley already had a 21-3 lead, but Lewis’ run killed any chance of a Littlerock comeback and highlighted a rushing attack that gained 379 yards.

“I know that defenses are keying in on me most of the time,” Lewis said. “But I know it opens up chances for other people. I’m not going to be worried about my own stats.”

Lewis finished with 124 yards in 17 carries and three touchdowns in just under three quarters. The Antelopes (4-2, 2-0 in Golden League play) emptied the bench in the final quarter.

Quarterback Trymon Redick gained 66 yards in eight carries and backup tailback Ken Nelson had 51 yards in eight carries for Antelope Valley.

Reserve fullback Jared Westberg gained 67 yards in four carries late in the game, including a two-yard touchdown run with three minutes left.

“It can’t remember a ballgame like this when our offense was this productive,” Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said. “We expected more trouble on the option. We hadn’t seen that yet this season.”

Littlerock (2-2-3, 0-1-1) lost quarterback Bruce Johnson because of a leg injury suffered early in the fourth quarter. Toby Semerenko returned Johnson’s fumble 12 yards for a score to give Antelope Valley a 42-3 lead.

Devon Reece had 71 yards in 16 carries for the Lobos.
