Quartz Hill Defeats Highland
QUARTZ HILL — Senior quarterback Damein Kendrid ran for a touchdown and passed for another during a 2-minute 29-second stretch of the third quarter to lead Quartz Hill High to a 13-7 Golden League victory over Highland on Friday night.
With Quartz Hill (4-1-2, 1-0-1 in league play) trailing, 7-0, midway through the quarter, Kendrid capped a four-play, 38-yard drive by running 13 yards for a touchdown.
The drive was set up when linebacker Eric Gray recovered a fumble by Highland quarterback Jason Carr.
On Quartz Hill’s next series, a two-play drive, Kendrid threw deep to Andy Rethi, who outreached defensive back Marcus Prevost for the ball and scored.
Highland (4-3, 1-1) missed a chance when safety Monte Reed intercepted a pass by Kendrid at the four-yard line. But Reed fumbled the ball, which was scooped up by Highland’s Norris Theus.
Tailback LeDarral Hollingsworth gained three yards to the one on the first play, but Carr was sacked for a four-yard loss, Highland was called for holding and Carr threw an incomplete pass before John Hall missed a 33-yard field-goal attempt.
Highland took a 7-0 lead when Theus returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Highland’s Kirk Brown missed a 40-yard field-goal attempt in the third quarter.
