Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : City Asked to Shun Violent Shows

Residents here are being asked to avoid violent entertainment on Thursday as part of “Turn Off the Violence Day” sponsored by the city’s Anti-Gang Task Force.

Organizers want residents to shun violent music, movies and television for one day. The theme is supported by the Crime Prevention Coalition in Washington, D.C.

“There isn’t much (entertainment) out there that’s not violent in some way,” said Cecilia Burda, who heads the task force. “We need to see what impact this (exposure to violence) has upon us.”

Santa Clarita task force members have distributed more than 30,000 handouts advocating nonviolence on local school campuses. On Thursday they will hang “Turn Off the Violence” banners at the city’s junior and senior high schools.

The banners will be signed by students and later presented to television stations to encourage nonviolent programming, Burda said.
