In a move that could give filmgoers more ticket-buying choices, PacerCats said it will license its ticket information systems technology to film exhibitors, enabling them to more easily install or build custom interactive ticketing systems.

The deal is expected to accelerate efforts to allow movie customers to buy tickets through television, interactive kiosks, personal computers and other outlets.

PacerCats, which made the announcement Wednesday at the ShowEast convention for exhibitors in Atlantic City, N.J., is a joint venture between Los Angeles-based Ticketmaster and Great Britain’s Wembly.

The deal raises the stakes in the increasingly advanced movie ticket business, which is now served by such firms as New York-based MovieFone.

The Times reported last month that Justice Department officials looking at Ticketmaster’s operations have talked to officials at MovieFone, who have expressed concern that Ticketmaster may soon dominate the film ticket business as it does the concert ticket business.

A spokesman for PacerCats denied that the decision announced Wednesday to license the technology to exhibitors is designed to defuse those concerns, saying the company believes it “is the right thing to do and is good business.”

PacerCats will license its “electronic box office TeleTicketing technology” to the exhibitors without necessarily using the company’s own software. That will give exhibitors the freedom to choose ticketing services or build their own from scratch.
