The owner of a Compton discount store was fatally wounded outside his business during an argument over the use of a pay phone, police said Friday.

Ahmad Amer, 45, of Anaheim was shot in the head and was dead on arrival at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, Compton Police Detective Michael Markey said.

Amer came out of the Ninety Five Cents Plus store at 810 W. Rosecrans Ave. and confronted people who had been using the phone and argued with them, Markey said.

“A man standing with the people, but who we believe was not directly involved in the argument, shot the victim with a handgun,” he said.
