PROPOSITION OPPOSITION: The Antelope Valley Interfaith Council...
PROPOSITION OPPOSITION: The Antelope Valley Interfaith Council has called for the defeat of Proposition 187, the ballot initiative that would deny certain educational and social services to illegal immigrants.
The council approved a statement at its Oct. 19 meeting that advanced moral and practical arguments against the “Save Our State” measure, which is also opposed by the state’s Catholic bishops and many other mainline religious bodies.
The statement said that although the council recognized the need for a remedy to illegal immigration, “we are convinced that Proposition 187 will do nothing to resolve this situation.”
The statement quoted the Biblical verses Exodus 23:9 and Matthew 25:35-40 in support of its declaration that “in God’s eyes no one is an illegal immigrant,” according to Rabbi Alan Henkin, a council spokesman.
ORGANIST’S MILESTONE: Richard Jenkins, organist at St. Paul’s First Lutheran Church in North Hollywood for 40 years, will play a short concert at 4 p.m. Sunday.
A 100-voice choir will sing. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Karl Gurgel, president of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
The church is at 5244 Tujunga Ave. For information, call (818) 761-3131.
HAYFORD TALK: The Rev. Jack Hayford, a national figure in Pentecostal and charismatic church circles, will be the guest speaker at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Canoga Park Presbyterian Church, 22103 Vanowen St., to open the congregation’s three-day observance of its 40th anniversary.
For information on the weekend events, call (818) 883-3510.
INTERFAITH DIALOGUES: A series of six informal, interreligious conversations at an Encino home will be launched Wednesday night under the sponsorship of the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council.
Two sessions will be offered, one for beginners and one for those who attended previous dialogues. “Participants attend as individuals, not as formal representatives of their faiths,” said a spokesman.
The exercises are led by Mal Cohen and involve no fees. Call the council office in Chatsworth (818) 718-6460 for information.
WALSH CONCERT: Singer Sheila Walsh, co-host of “The 700 Club” program with Pat Robertson for five years, will perform in a free concert at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at Shepherd of the Hills Church, 19700 Rinaldi St., Porter Ranch.
At 2:30 p.m. that day, a church spokesman announced, auditions will be held at the church for principal roles in a production of “Amahl and the Night Visitor,” by Gian Carlo Menotti.
For information, call (818) 831-9333 on weekdays.
