PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Washington Loses Job, but Not Presence

Lionel Washington made no attempt to hide his disappointment when he was replaced by Albert Lewis at cornerback after the fourth game. Since then, however, Washington has played not so much like a reserve as a fifth starter.

“He’s been a consummate pro,” Coach Art Shell said. “When the change was made, he said that he didn’t like it but instead of feeling sorry for himself, he has continued to work and has made himself and the team better.”

In the Raiders’ victory over Atlanta last week, Washington had two second-half interceptions, running his season total to three.

What’s in store for Tyrone Montgomery? For the first six games, Montgomery was the team’s starting tailback. Then last Sunday, Harvey Williams got the job.

Williams promptly gained 107 yards against the Falcons, and Montgomery did not play a down.

“Having a guy like Harvey is tough because he can play every aspect of the game,” Shell said.

“In Tyrone’s case, we really haven’t tapped into his talents. He knows that we just have to find the right situations to use him in.”

Montgomery might, in fact, drop deeper on the depth chart. The Raiders have been giving Calvin Jones, their third-round draft choice, more repetitions in practice. Jones, a speedster from Nebraska, has yet to be activated for a game this season.

Safety Eddie Anderson, who has a groin injury, has been listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Houston Oilers.
