PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Ibarra Scores Twice, Westminster Dominates Winless Tustin, 27-7
TUSTIN — Westminster running back Leonard Ibarra scored two touchdowns and rushed for 101 yards as the Lions defeated winless Tustin, 27-7, in a Golden West League game Friday night at Tustin High School.
The Lions scored on the first drive of the game, as Ibarra capped a nine-play, 62-yard drive with a six-yard run into the end zone. On the ensuing kickoff, Tustin (0-8, 0-3) fumbled, indicative of a difficult night during a difficult season.
Westminster (6-2, 3-0) recovered the fumble and, four plays later, Lions’ quarterback Jerry Allison kept the ball on an option and ran in for a two-yard score.
Westminster dominated the first half, giving up only 49 yards rushing and 32 yards passing, and forced five turnovers.
The Tillers showed life in the second half, as quarterback Kevin Timone marched his team 65 yards downfield. With first and goal at the six-yard line, Timone was hit in the backfield by linebacker Heath Wilcox, forcing a fumble.
On Tustin’s next two possessions, Timone fumbled and was sacked on fourth down, thwarting both drives, taking the life out of the Tillers’ offense.
Tustin finally got in the end zone with 8 minutes 54 seconds left in the game, when Timone hit receiver Pierre Sanjurjo for an eight-yard touchdown pass. The drive was sparked by Tiller running back Greg Carnal’s 65-yard run on a Tiller double reverse.
Westminster sealed the game with 2:45 left, when Ibarra scored on a 26-yard run for the game’s last score.
