2 Rallies Back Opposing Sides of Debate
The fierce debate over Proposition 187 continued to rage Saturday as opposing sides staged well-attended rallies to drum up support.
The measure would deny non-emergency health care, education and social services to illegal immigrants.
At noon, about 200 people attended an anti-Proposition 187 rally at the Santa Ana Civic Center that was organized by Students Against SOS (Save Our State).
“(Proposition 187) opens the door to the beginning of a police state in a nation that continues to be democratic,” said Zeke Hernandez, past state president of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
Later, more than 300 people crowded into a meeting room at the Holiday Inn in Buena Park for a pro-Proposition 187 event sponsored by United We Stand. Ron S. Prince, an author of the controversial measure, received a standing ovation when he was introduced.
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-El Cajon) and Ed Royce (R-Fullerton), and Assemblyman Richard L. Mountjoy (R-Arcadia) also spoke in favor of the measure.
