Huard Lifts Washington Past Oregon State, 24-10 : Pac-10: Quarterback passes and runs for three touchdowns as Kaufman is limited to 69 yards.
SEATTLE — Oregon State’s wishbone dominated and the Beavers’ defense contained Napoleon Kaufman. But thanks to Damon Huard, No. 15 Washington still managed to win Saturday.
Huard passed for two touchdowns to Eric Bjornson and ran for another in a 24-10 victory.
Kaufman, the leading rusher in the Pacific 10 Conference, was held to a season-low 69 yards in 21 carries, with a long gain of 19 yards. He lost yardage in six of his carries.
And Oregon State, 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-10, had the ball 11 minutes more than the Huskies--35:34 to 24:26.
“Oregon State geared their entire defense to stopping Napoleon, which really opened up our passing game,” Huard said. “If they give me man coverage and Eric and I get our timing down, I know they can’t stop us.”
Said Washington Coach Jim Lambright, whose team is 6-2 and 3-2: “Oregon State controlled the clock. That Oregon State team scared me to death. They’re close to busting out on someone.”
Huard, who completed 10 of 17 passes for 151 yards, played well despite lingering injuries of bruised ribs and a bruised knee he suffered in a loss to Oregon last week. He wore a brace on his right knee and a flak jacket to protect his ribs.
“Damon was hurting all this week and didn’t practice much,” Bjornson said. “It really pumps the guys up when you see a guy playing with a brace. It’s real inspirational.”
