SLATE MAILERS

The week before the Nov. 8 election, millions of so-called slate mailers will be sent to voters throughout California. The mailers, often purporting to be “official guides” to voting, sometimes are compiled by legitimate organizations nd reflect their endorsements. But many of these mailes are organized as profit-making ventures by political consultants and the slots are sold to candidates.

LAST-MINUTE MAILERS

The hardest campaign charges to answer are those sent by mail in the last few days of the campaign when it’s either too late or too expensive to respond. Voters should be especially wary of any last-minute charges, analysts say, becauseif they had merit they would have been raised before.
