OUTLOOK
Becker predicted his team would win the league title last season and it did, easily. It also won the Southern Section and the Southern California Regional title. But with only one starter and two of his top 10 players returning, Becker is making no such statements this season. In fact, he’s picking his team third or fourth, based on what it did during the summer. He’s also prepared to abandon his up-tempo, frenetic style. “Our whole style is going to be more deliberate,” he said. “We won’t stall, but we will be more patient.” Becker is trying to be patient with Miller (4 point average, 7 rebounds), whom he needs to have a big year. “He’s been very frustrated,” Becker said. “He’s used to being unguarded while everybody else was on (Chris) Vlasic and (Jon) Surface. It was easy for him to score. Now, he’s the guy everyone is going after and he’s finding out the game is a lot tougher than he thought.” Becker will also need big years from Bessho, who starts at point guard, and Martinez, who saw some playing time in the playoffs.
