Luther H. Foster Jr.; Headed Tuskegee University
Luther H. Foster Jr., 81, who headed the renowned Tuskegee Institute from 1953 to 1981. During Foster’s tenure, the 113-year-old black college in Tuskegee, Ala., remained relatively calm during the turbulent civil rights era. The institute also grew from 2,000 to 3,500 students during his administration and in 1985 was renamed Tuskegee University. At his death he was the head of the Academy for Educational Development, a nonprofit organization that promotes educational programs in about 80 American cities and 100 countries. He also was a former president of the United Negro College Fund. In East Point, Ga., on Tuesday of a heart attack.
