World IN BRIEF : VATICAN : Women’s Priority Is Family, Pope Says

Pope John Paul II, in a written message, said women have a full right to a place in all walks of public life but that their role in the family is paramount. The Pope, who has come under fire from women’s groups and some nuns for upholding a ban on ordaining women, praised women’s progress in pursuing careers outside the family and said their right to a role in public life must be protected. But he said the roles of wife and mother are the most important.
