The work schedule that closed county offices on alternate Fridays was ended in November by the county Board of Supervisors, who said the cost-savings did not justify the public inconvenience.
But in Irvine, city officials say a similar schedule begun in March has increased productivity, improved customer service by extending City Hall hours and saved the city about $56,000 in reduced operating costs.
With the reduction of 150 city employees over a three-year period, the work schedule makes better use of the remaining employees, according to city management analyst Mary Lou King.
“We have had no citizen complaints,” King reported.
