PUNK BONDS

Regarding Brett Gurewitz’s concern of defections from his Epitaph label (Pop Eye, Dec. 11):

If an act such as Offspring can experience the miraculous achievement of a Top 5 platinum album on an independent punk label, there should be no reason for them to leave. This would only be understandable if their albums weren’t selling huge quantities (as per X’s somewhat unnecessary defection from Slash to Elektra a decade ago).

As long as proper royalties were paid and promotional expenses were offered, there would be no logical reason to seek greener pastures.

It is natural for Gurewitz to be “baffled” about losing Rancid. But artistic freedom can also be procured from the majors. Fashionable looks and what are now hip musical styles don’t necessarily equate with bonding.

While loyalty is certainly a question of consideration, Gurewitz must realize that, unfortunately, under no circumstances was the punk movement ever founded on or locked into any aims based on altruism.

In a change of heart, touted punk group Rancid announced late last month that it had rejected a deal with Epic Records and would remain with Epitaph.
